Sting Again

Curiosity is the very basis of education and if you tell me that curiosity killed the cat, I say only the cat died nobly.



I mean I honestly enjoy his best songs, or, rather, the ones I consider his best... assuming that tastes differ... Yet, it took me ages to pick out the clips with more or less distinct sounds... after hours spent on youtube I am now wondering if he has any speech defects like stuttering or mumbling,.. alternatively, he might not bother with all that stuff at all.

1. Про Do/Does.
Кусочек из "Every little thing she does is magic" авторства Стинга (он англичанин, и я ему верю).
"Every little thing she does is magic,
Everything she do just turns me on".
Почему в первой строчке всё в порядке с этим согласованием, а во второй он вдруг с "she" ставит "do"?
И в "Shape of my heart" то же самое:
"He doesn't play for the money he wins
He don't play for respect".
Нет, я очень внимательно слушала. Четыре раза. Да и с произношением у него проблем нет.

  • First, English Grammar is the most solid thing in the world, ever.. he-he, DO/DOES bears neither exceptions nor irregularity in standard English, at least.
  • Secondly, Resh seems to be right about Sting's 'Shape of my heart'. In several recordings he very clearly sings 'he don't', at least that's what I can hear. Regarding the other song, I would take issues with Resh. The very phrase sounds differently in various recordings, mind there's a /z-dg/ blend!
  • In terms of 'native' pronunciation, there is a wide range of accents which may sound confusing to ESL/EFL learners who basically deal with RP rather than anything else. It's worth pointing out that Sting's accent is not RP ;) no matter how touching it may sound. And I fairly doubt if he is keen on careful articulation while singing. (I mean I don't mind Sting and even have a number of his songs on my 'best-of-best' play-list, yet his, hm, artistry could hardly escape your notice when being compared to others' - especially in duets )
  • To sum up, for a learner it appears useful to remember that, as a native speaker, Sting can run the risk of speaking/singing the way he cares, while this is absolutely unacceptable to non-natives (in case they don't want to be mocked at)

tired...and frustrated

Despite a great deal of time spent on the blog design there is still no positive result to be satisfied with. Probably due to the lack of the main idea it was so difficult to find the most suitable background... What made things worse is that to work out the concept of the blog I need the colour pattern which fits my mood, alternatively the suitable design can't be refined until the project has been carefully thought over. Hm... sort f bewildered...

A bit of positive thinking...began making cherry jam... rather engaging... especially the process of removing stones... Just wondering what it would be like... :)

again, what could be done about the background...or, precisely, which background would be the best?.. guess, need to read more, but do not have enough time, sadly...

going to bed, eventually :axe:

John Locke

I always associate John Locke, one of many we were supposed to digest at university, with the notion of tabula rasa (a blank state of mind every pupil has before going to school :laugh: ) which we would use as an excuse for not understanding smth...

As far as I remember, it was popular to rather share his views and even learn some of his quotes to show off. More likely than not, it was due to his absolutely English name compared to different humes, rousseaus and kants and the like... Little did we realise what it was all about.

Now, starting 'An Essay Concerning Human Understanding' I am still far from assessing the theory itself. Much more pleasure can be experiences from mere reading, exposure to the language, evaluating the style and noticing how words work... Amazing... music to my ear :cow:

" Your lordship is known to have so far advanced your speculations in the most abstract and general knowledge of things, beyond the ordinary reach or common methods, that your allowance and approbation of the design of this Treatise will at least preserve it from being condemned without reading, and will prevail to have those parts a little weighed, which might otherwise perhaps be thought to deserve no consideration, for being somewhat out of the common road. However, with the alarm clock set for 7 am I think it's time to round off, otherwise the ideas I am most likely to sound tomorrow 'might perhaps be thought to deserve no consideration, for being somewhat out of common road...' :hah:

ps joking apart, next comes a remark requiring a closer investigation:

Morning Coffee

Gee! I can hardly imagine my life without a mug of hot black coffee in the morning...:cow: (sugar-free, btw)

There's never only one mug, to be honest... if I am not going to be late, of course.

Setting Priorities

10 days passed since my CPE... Seems to be the right time to stop kicking myself and start thinking about future...

Back to the salt mines in a way )


So, the following is a rough draft of how to push myself into a new, happier life:
  1. Schedule on-line time - urgent!
  2. Reduce the number of accounts according to the common sense and the expected long-term benefits of each site - considerably!
  3. Draw a border line between what is hobby and what is job - at last!
Alternatively, it appears wise to classify the questions into categories, like professional development, social interaction, inner self, hobbies and the like... (Funny enough, it has never crossed my mind to structure my own life, that's probably why it has been such a mess so far)

Ok, getting down to brass tacks, this very diary is supposed to deal with some personal issues, more often than not the entries will to be screened.

This account is for English as a pastime subject to study/teach :)

Writing skills need further development - despite the time spent on adjusting the settings, the account is far from perfect, yet... it's open for discussion

Facebook has proved its value in keeping in touch with the news from around the world. Even though it looks a bit messy now, it is still much more effective than signing up for newsletters.

Still looking for a page to come up with some professional ideas on...guess it's due to the lack of ideas time...however, this point is to be continued)

It's Been A Long Way Back...

It's really nice to be back after so much time spent elsewhere....

The most reasonable excuse might be that I forgot the password, yet it's not the only one, to be honest.

However, all is well that ends well....having a strong feeling that I'll be writing here in abundance :)

A Few Picks about What Good Communication Might Be....

  • Apparently, the purpose of communication is developing an interesting exchange of ideas. Thus, using language correctly seems to be the main point which enables people to express their feelings.
