Long ago, about last month I was told that my English is out-of-date, not modern and not English at all. The most dreadful thing was that I knew it was true, and another crusial thing concerned the person who opened my eyes on my English. Poor I was crying desperately all nights till I found quite a modern book by Tony Parsons 'Man and Wife' (first published in 2002). Now that I've read it up to the end, I may say that I sort of like it. Can't say it's a masterpiece, yet it was rather pleasant to read mostly because it deals with marriage, family life, love, children and other human values. I wish I had now the most up-to-date English, however I guess I should read other books by the same author to get the most natural command of the language (^_^)
Actually, what I was going to post today is not about the language. The thing that struck me was the following:
He wrote: 'That's how fragile all this is, as gossamer thin as a spider's web, as intricate and fragile as that, meticulously built but easy torn apart by a few cruel, casual blows. My parents' marriage looked like it was made of sterner stuff. My mum and dad genuinely believed that they couldn't be happy with anyone else. And I knew that wasn't true for me. I could have been happy with Kazumi (his girlfriend). Just as Kazumi could find the human bond we all seek with some other man. And just as Cyd (his wife) could have found someone else to love her. That didn't make what I had with my wife feel like nothing. In some ways the knowledge that either of us could survive without the other made what we had seem even more precious. We stayed together because we chose to stay together. In the world full of choices, we chose each other. '
For me it sounded like a thunderstorm on a nice sunny day. Why on Earth people are bound to live together? It's so evident now because they chose to live with each other Is there love in it? I don't really know, it just feels comfortable to think of choices we made
