I find it rather difficult to say which book is my favourite because I am fond of reading and I usually read a lot.

My favourite authors are: Bernard Shaw (I like his plays which are full of sparkling humour), John Galsworthy (when I read his Forsyte Saga I was astonished by his profound description of several generations), Jane Austen (her beautiful English sounds like music to me), William Somerset Maugham (I enjoy his "Theatre" every time I need a rest), Lewis Carrol (once I got amused by the way he plays with English and I find every sentence fascinating), Clive Lewis and JRR Tolkien (they both managed to leave so much for the reader to think about).
One of the lasts book I read was by G. Chesterton. It was reading for pleasure as I always find Father Brown absolutely sincere, open-hearted and very sensible.
Not long ago I discovered Wodehouse. Brilliant English humour, modern language, exciting intrigue - all that make the reading most amusing.
Honestly, I like English literature most of all. Nevertheless, when I do some reading in Russian I usually reread V.Losski or Ivan Ilyin. Actually, they are philosophers, and they are very dear to me.

Jabberwocky - a poem by Lewis Carroll

'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

"Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!"

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought --
So rested he by the Tumtum tree.
And stood awhile in thought.

And as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came wiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

"And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
Oh, frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!"
He chortled in his joy.

'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

I really love it. :unic:

An early bird catches a worm
The early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese

Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy and wealthy and wise.
Early to rise and early to bed makes a man healthy, wealthy and... dead.

An apple a day keeps a doctor away.
An onion a day keeps everyone away.

A man who lives in glass house should not cast stones.
A man who lives in glass house should change clothes in basement.

And also:

An apple a day keeps a doctor away if you throw hard and if aim is accurate)))

If an apple falls on you, run away--the tree does not fall far from the apple.

Change is inevitable.
Except from a vending machine.

You can't have everything.
Where would you put it?

I don't like eating out. On the contrary, I prefer eating at home.:cow: Nevertheless, once I happened to be so thirsty that I had to call at the nearest café to have a drink. As I remember now, I ordered a cup of coffee and I got really disappointed in receiving a cup of cold coffee. Moreover, it was sweet and I hate sugar. I left the café and hurried home :winnie: where I enjoyed a cup of fine strong black coffee. Actually, it is my favourite drink.

There is a big park near my block of flats. I usually walk out my dog there. I have got a German shepherd. Though it is about ten years old it remains very active and enthusiastic about our walks. So sometimes I have to do some running with the dog or we play football together. I guess that's all about my playing sport at the park. As for reading I prefer to enjoy it at home. Besides while reading I usually need lots of additional material and it's not very convenient to bring piles of books to the park. As for some reading for pleasure I actually have so little time that there is no opportunity to do it elsewhere. I only have time but at home or in transport.

I started to learn English at school but I can't say I have a natural command of it. The reason is that I lack communication. Though I spend much time on different skills, I feel I have a want of real, live speaking. There is an opportunity of speaking in the Internet but I don't believe in its value. I am not sure I can enrich my English by talking to a person whom I don't know and about topics that I don't care. Travelling might be considered the best way out in case I have had enough money.

I am from Russia which is by far the biggest country in the world, covering an eighth of the Earth's land area. In the South my country shares land borders with China, Korea, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Georgia and Azerbaijan. In the West we are neighbours with Poland, Belarus, Ukraine and the Baltic Republics. Norway and Finland border with Russia in the North. In the east Russia has sea borders with Japan and the USA.

I live in Moscow, which is actually a very old city. According to some historical documents it was founded before around 1147 by Prince Yuri Dolgoruki. Now Moscow is the political, business and cultural centre of Russia. Its historical centre is the Kremlin and the Red Square with St.Basil Cathedral (built in 1561). In spite of great destructions caused by the WW2, lots of historical monuments were restored and are now kept in oder. Among other sites worth visiting are the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, the Bolshoi Theatre, the Tretyakov Gallery, the Ostankino tower, which is considered to be the tallest structure in Europe, and others. It's almost impossible to visit Moscow and not to take a tour around the old Arbat, its fascinating narrow streets will take you back to the 19th century. For those who prefer night entertaining Tverskaya Street, the Manege Square are waiting with lots of expensive, luxurious bars and restaurants, clubs and casinos. Though Moscow is now becoming a European city, its still very unique.

There are lots of holidays in my country and it is rather difficult to choose the most popular one as now different groups of people celebrate different holidays which they consider the most popular important. The people I am in touch associated with celebrate Christmas and Easter, Easter which is actually called Pascha in Russia. Pascha is said to be the greatest holiday in the Russian year and is celebrated for a week. It should be said that the celebrations of the feast starts on Saturday when almost all Russian people come to churches to hallow Easter cakes and eggs. It is the Saturday when Holy Fire comes down in Jerusalem. On Sunday night we attend a holiday service and it is beyond any words to describe the joy and happiness people feel in their hearts. We usually do not work for the next week but attend services and visit our relatives and friends to exchange Easter eggs. This custom originates in the 1st century and is connected with St.Maria of Magdala. We also watch the sunrise as the sun doesn't burn eyes on Pascha.

The text below is an awkward attempt to practise phrasal verbs and idioms:

They were brought up together and shared the same interests, games and books. When he grew up he left for the University and she stayed on waiting for him. Then the war broke up out and her parents died. When she ran out of food and money she began to work as a nurse in a hospital, looking after the enemy soldiers. The landlord put up the rent so she had to share her room with another nurse. She didn’t mind taking care of the wounded soldiers as deep in her heart she felt pity for them. That day she didn’t feel up to going out because it was her day off, besides she was worn out, but her room mate had picked up a cold and she had to stand in for her at the hospital.

He had been dreaming of becoming an engineer since his childhood but the day his country was occupied he broke off his study to join in the partisan movement to fight off the enemy. At first their raids were quite successful and they managed to blow up the a bridge and the arsenal. After several severe battles they were put down. All his comrades in arms were killed by the a bomb that went off somewhere near by, he was badly injured badly and captured. He had an operation and then was then put up in the ward she was in charge of.

Looking back on that day she always wondered how she managed not to pass out the moment she saw him.The doctor tried out some new anaesthetic on him and he slept through the operation but as it began to wear off it brought on pain and despair. She spent every free minute by him, leaving him in fear he might take a turn for the worst. But due to his youth and to the fact that he was in good hands, as the doctor went ahead with the treatment, it took him less then a fortnight to build up his strength. He wanted passionately wanted to run off. All these days Every day he had been turning the plan over in his mind to be sure hoping it wouldn't fall through. When finally he was over the worst they decided to make off. They never spoke of what they had come through. And and sometimes he they failed to drop off sleep, he because of pain and she - because of fear. Bad habits die hard.
